“In collaboration with the National Museum in Warsaw, the exhibition traces this unique moment in Polish history when, despite the partition of the country, artists maintained—and in some respects created—the national identity that has since been termed “Polish”. Poets, musicians of course—including the great Frédéric Chopin and Ignacy Paderewski—but also painters and engravers set about the task of keeping their country, which had vanished from the map of Europe, alive.

And when, after more than 123 years of non-existence and the division of its territory among the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia, and the Austrian Empire, Poland regained its independence in 1918, it became home to one of the most original artistic centers on the continent.

Through the loan of some one hundred works by the greatest names in Polish painting of the era, the exhibition demonstrates how artists built and cultivated a shared culture by drawing inspiration from Poland’s glorious past, bearing witness to its tragic history, depicting its people and lands, and also by absorbing cross-cultural influences from across Europe—particularly France—while situating their work within the major artistic movements of the time, from history painting to Symbolism.

The chronological period (1840–1918) is thus marked by the rise of Polish Romanticism and the emergence of modernism, shortly before Poland regained its independence.

This exhibition, held under the patronage of the President of the French Republic and the President of the Republic of Poland, would not have been possible without the participation of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. The back side of the plate bears the trademark of the porcelain manufacture: MPS Porcelaines Union Limousine, as well as the artist’s signature.

Union Limousine is a traditional French porcelain brand from the Limoges region. The company was founded in 1927 in Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat and produced fine, often hand-painted Limoges porcelain until its acquisition by Limoges Castel in 1987.
